Los Angeles Santa Cecilia Celebrations

(updated November 23, 2016)

The Santa Cecilia Procession and Mass honoring the patron saint of musicians typically is held yearly on the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week. Hundreds of Musicians arrive at the Mariachi Plaza on 1st Street and Boyle St at the Mariachi Plaza (now a subway stop) to partake in the procession, mass and blessing of instruments.

This is a free all day event starting at around 10 am for the procession through the streets, then immediately after the Mass, an all day/night concert on the stage by various mariachi groups from throughout Los Angeles, small and big! It is a special day of music that just soothes the soul!

I am not sure how many years the procession and mass has been held, but I have attended off and on since 1990. There is a link below on the history of the Boyle Hotel building and it states Mariachis have gathered at this plaza since the 1930's!

There is also a second celebration that occurs on the Sunday preceding for those who work during the week, though it is only a concert, no procession or mass. It also is free. The photos below are from the Tuesday events.
